In June 2026, the global Valorant community witnessed a bizarre paradox: Leviatán – the Masters London champions – failed to qualify for Champions Shanghai. The top Americas team dominated the mid-season international, but was eliminated from the year-end world championship by the VCT points system itself.
Context: How does the VCT points system work? The VCT 2026 season consists of Kickoff, Stage 1, Stage 2, and Masters London (mid-season). Each team accumulates VCT points across stages; total points determine Champions qualification. Masters London does not grant an automatic berth. Leviatán started at a major disadvantage: star rookie Neon (Masters MVP) was ineligible for Kickoff due to age, costing them crucial early points.
At Stage 1 and Stage 2, Leviatán tried to catch up, but the fierce competition in VCT Americas – described as "absolutely stacked" by pro player Sliggy – limited them to 15 points. Meanwhile, rivals NRG and G2 Esports steadily accumulated points from the start, moving ahead.
Core: Why did Leviatán fail? 1. Early-season loss: Missing Neon at Kickoff was the root cause. A team without its star duelist cannot compete fully. Had Neon played from the start, Leviatán could have earned at least 3-4 more points. 2. Tactical mistakes in Stage 2: Analysis shows Leviatán self-banned their best map (Split – 11-0 record) and deviated from their trusted Neon-Phoenix composition. This was likely an attempt to experiment, wrongly assuming qualification was secure – a costly strategic error. 3. Regional pressure: VCT Americas has deep talent: NRG, G2, 100 Thieves, Sentinels are all strong. The three Champions spots were quickly filled by more consistent teams. Despite winning Masters London, Leviatán lacked the points to surpass NRG (rank 1) and G2 (rank 2).
Contrarian: System failure or Leviatán's own fault? Many argue VCT should change the rules and grant an automatic spot to Masters winners. However, Sliggy – a respected voice – emphasizes: "Leviatán dug their own grave. They had chances to earn points early, but they failed. If they played at their full potential, they would be at Champions." This suggests the problem is not purely systemic. Banning their best map and experimenting when qualification was not certain was a risk. Moreover, Riot's age rule is clear; Leviatán knew Neon would miss Kickoff but had no solid backup plan.
Takeaway: Lessons for the future This incident sparks debate about fairness in the VCT points system. Should Riot Games change the rules so Masters winners automatically qualify? In the short term, Leviatán must wait for the 2027 season to prove themselves. However, this serves as a wake-up call for all teams: never get complacent, and prepare for roster risks. For Leviatán, they remain strong contenders for future Champions titles – if they learn from this painful failure.
