Table Tennis at the 2027 European Games: Qualification System Announced, Mixed Team Event Debuts

European table tennis has entered a decisive phase with the publication of the qualification system for the 4th European Games in Istanbul. The milestone arrives with 266 days left before the opening ceremony, and the table tennis competition will run from 16 to 22 June 2027, inside the broader Games running from 16 to 27 June. The plan was agreed between the European Olympic Committees and the European Table Tennis Union, giving players a detailed roadmap toward both continental glory and an Olympic ticket. The most visible change is scale. A total of 192 athletes will travel to Istanbul, split equally into 96 men and 96 women. That figure surpasses the 152 athletes who competed in Kraków 2026 and makes table tennis one of the largest sports at the European Games. Three medal events will be staged: men's singles, women's singles and mixed team. The increase of 40 places shows that organisers want to widen the stage for member nations. The mixed team event is the real breakthrough, making its European Games debut. Sixteen teams will compete, but only twelve will qualify directly. Those twelve places include the host team from Turkey and the 11 National Olympic Committees ranked highest in the European Mixed Team Ranking. That ranking will be published by ETTU on 6 November 2026. The remaining four spots will be decided at a separate qualification event in Istanbul from 9 to 12 February 2027. Each mixed team consists of three men, three women and one reserve per gender. This structure allows coaches to rotate line-ups during a congested schedule.
